I appreciate your opinion, but I have no idea who he is. No offense toward
Alex, but adding MS-MVP next to your name does not substitute for actual
Microsoft documentation. I wish to know what the source of this
information is.

Hi

I would not exactly call Alex Nichol (MS-MVP) your ordinary Joe ;-) I
trust his words about this at least as much as any official Microsoft
web page.

I agree with you, Torgeir. Alex knows more about the technical aspects
of Product Activation than probably anyone not employed by MS, and
probably more than most that are employed by MS.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

This is a known thing that Microsoft does. I do not believe it is stated
anywhere on any Microsoft website. It is true though.

"By the act of scrolling this post on your computer, and/or printing or
replying to this post, you agree that I am your everlasting Lord &
Saviour. Breach of this term will result in you burning in hell for
ever and ever! Amen!"
That's pretty weak Chris, of course it's stated somewhere. That's
like saying "because I said so".

Here's one source that was provided in this thread:
http://www.microsoft.com/philippines/windowsxp/article03.htm

By the way, I'm 9 feet tall. I don't have any pictures or someone to
corroborate my claim, but "it is true though".

LOL

I believe you! ROFL!

Ken is correct, go to this link http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/ at the bottom of the page click on http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/bas...sproductactivationtechnicalmarketbulletin.doc then go to the last paragraph on page 6.

Satisfied?

ok... So like I'm going to format my computer pretty soon and install Windows XP Home on it again. Its been like a year since I first installed it and Activated it. Because its been more than 120 days since the last time i activated it, your tellng me that I just use the same product key when it asks me to input the product key?

The product key doesn't matter, you use the same one on ethe same
machine for the same version of the OS. What it means, is that you can
do an internet activation.

Greetings --

Certainly.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

There are alot of depends to that question. I am trying to do something similar and have hit a snag.
Per Microsoft, an OEM version can go on only 1 to 2 CPU's. A retail can go on the same. If you want more, you buy a license.
There are rules regarding hardware upgrades.

Go to www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation and read.
You can reactivate over the net. If it does not work, you will be directed to a phone number that is answered real quick.

I have been testing xp on several machines. Each time I
remove it completely before installing on another machine.

now it says I need to reactivate it. Can I reactivate it
before I try to install it? I don't want to sit on the
phone waiting while installing.

Can I do it over the net?

I have the original cd with the original product key.
thanks in advance for any help :o)

Wong. Any licensed copy can only be installed and activated on one PC
at a time. OEM versions can generally only be installed and activated
on the first PC it was activated on. As to mire than one CPU (in one
system), Pro can handle that.

No, this isn't correct. You are mixing up the word "CPU" with the
word "computer." A CPU is not a computer.

First, note that it has nothing to do with OEM vs Retail copies.
It has to do with XP Professional vs XP Home.

Second, the issue with one or two CPUS is not a licensing issue,
but a technical one.

A single copy with a single license is licensed for a single
computer. However that single computer, if it is running XP
Porfessional (not Home) can be a dual-processor computer, running
two CPUs.
