Re-nstallation of Win XP Pro with SP2 - I386 error

I have tried every combination I can find on this forum and on the knowledge
base to re-install and integrated retail version of Win XP Pro with SP2.
The problem remains the same in every combination I try - ie that several
..dll and other files will not reload from either the original XP CD or any
location into which I copy the I386 folder.
In line with some KB articles I have modified SourcePath and ServicePack
paths in the registry but all to no avail.
The system file checker also display similar (but varied) results.
I am left with a basic functioning system - IE6 remains incomplete (ActiveX
functions are severely hampered) and things like networking have limited
function.
Does anyone have a work around or solution for this ?

You have a retail version of xp and SP2 is installed with it from
microsoft,now
you'd like to simply reinstall xp....If so,install the cd,exit the info
page,restart
computer, boot to xp cd (you may need to adjust for this in the BIOS-priority
boot device or similiar),once at xp cd boot screen, select install xp,new
copy,
delete the partition, create one, then xp formats and installs
auto....Where's the
problem...

Thanks for this.

The product is a retail version of XP Pro with SP2 combined onboard the
original CD.

However - I had hoped to find a simple solution to reloading the the OS from
the original media to avoid having to reload a multitude of packages.

But MS seemingly no longer maintain the "re-load or repair option" in any
realistic sense given that re-loads in-situ have a success rate of less than
50%. I am advised from elsewhere that this relates directly to MS's "system
protection" design which is intended to prevent 3rd party and potentially
malicious software from overwriting key system files and thereby hi-jacking
the system.

Naturally if all else fails I'll do a "new" install and reload everything.

However I'm still open to any MS assist on a workable solution.

Once again thanks.
