I've used XP/Pro for 2+ years with no major problems.
I recently had to purchase a new hardware system which was assembled by my
son :-).

I get 'hang ups' periodically ... far too often.
I mean that my system 'pauses' when I attempt to move from one application
to another.
It doesn't seem to matter which application is involved.
Usually, I can resolve the problem by closing the application I'm working
with.
However, increasingly, I have to re-boot and try again.
These problems occur with almost any application ... even intrinsic windows
applets like 'calculator' etc

My system, otherwise, works flawlessly.
I would say I'm a B+ Windows user.
I have no virus, Trojan or spyware problems.
The hardware seems intact -- Win XP/Pro is OEM.
All software (Office, Photoshop etc works fine)

I am Running:
Pentium IV 3.0 GHz
RAM = 1 GB
2 x 120 GB hard drives (RAID)
Minimum # of peripherals (Printer, Monitor, CD/DVD etc.)

Other than this problem with 'hang ups', the system runs fast and true.

Check the hardware. Since your son built it, make sure the power supply
is adequate. Many newbie builders (and I'm not saying he is since I
don't know) buy a pretty case and fill it with all sorts of goodies but
leave the psu that came with the case. Unless the case was a really
expensive one from Antec or LianLi, there is a good chance the psu
included with it is not the best. Make sure you have a high-quality psu
installed.

Also it would be a good idea to run a RAM test. I prefer Memtest86+ from
www.memtest86.org. Just because hardware is new doesn't mean it can't
have a problem.
