re-install of xp home

I have recently built a computer and installed a (copy) of windows Xp home. I downloaded service pack 1 etc. I wanted to try XP before going back to Windows Me. I have so pleased with XP that I have now bought a legit Copy of XP. I would like to install same without doing a clean install so I can keep all my settings etc. How can I go about this as I just really want to put a legal keycode in.

It will probably be enough to set out on the activation of it at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and take the option to do it over the phone. Before actually dialling
there is an option to enter a new Product key. Use the one from your
new copy (and make sure you keep that safe - when it says 'Don't lose
this number' it means it!). Provided that gets accepted you can then
cancel without phoning, and get on the net and run again to activate on
the net. If that works all should be well.
