Re-creating user account

Hi,
Win XP Media Edition on my HP box got corrupted. Had to use the
recovery disks to restore the OS.
The home dir. (desktop) of the user I used to log in is intact but the
account is gone.
Is there a way I can create a new user and opoint it to the original
account's home directory?

Yes, if you have some experience with editing the registry. The
location of profile folders is kept here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList:
