Re: Crash occurs with Font color or Bold toolbar button.

You perhaps have a corrupt toolbar file. Close Excel, do a search of
your HD for *.xlb, and delete any you find. Then re-start Excel (it
re-creates the toolbar file).

I came across this post because I was having the same problem and was
searching for a solution. The Bold button was simply the kiss of
death. There was *no* excel.xlb file, nor even any *.xlb file,
anywhere on my hard drive. I even used an industrial strength file
utility just to be sure MS wasn't hiding something from me -- no XLB
files at all.

Then I poked around some more and eventually isolated the following
behavior:

1. If I run Excel, load ExistingSpreadsheet.xls, and hit the bold
button, it crashes.

2. If I run Excel, type some text into the "Book1" default
spreadsheet and bold THAT, it does NOT crash. If I THEN load
ExistingSpreadsheet.xls and try bolding something, it does NOT crash.

Generally, as long as I bold something else first, and then load my
ExistingSpreadsheet.xls, I can bold at will. It would be easy to
conclude that the ExistingSpreadsheet.xls is corrupted, but it works
fine as long as it's not the first spreadsheet to attempt bolding, so
I'm not too impressed with that argument (just in case someone's going
to make it :)

I'll gladly test other scenarios if anyone has any ideas on how to
isolate this further. Thanks.

Chris,
I also was unable to find any files with the "xlb"
extension. This problem comes and goeson my laptop. I have
not been able to find a sequence that eliminates the
problem or causes the problem to appear.
When this particular problem exist there is also the
problem with crashes when composing a message through
Outlook. This forces you to use Hotmail to send messages.
Today, the problem showed up again, so I re-booted and
went to Hotmail to send a message. The problem went away.
Go figure!
Let me know if you find the culprit and if MS is
listening, chime in anytime.
