Hey all

Please could somone explain "Understanding PSU +12v rail and power
requirement for current video cards"

I am in process of building new system based on core 2 duo with 7900gtx, I
heard triple 12v rail is better than dual 12v rail and 1 single 12v rail
with high power is better than dual 12v rail is that correct?

I just don't undersatand how to calculate each rail amps, wattage, and all
that technical stuff.

Cheers

It's simple, really. Your card needs a 12V rail with a 22A current rating
(according to the published specs). But that's the total draw on the 12V
rail, including all other expected system components. In other words, the
video card is not going to draw ~264W (12X22) all by itself!!!

But, that 12V rating is a minimum recommendation. To be safe, try to find a
good name-brand power supply with at least a 30-34A rating on +12V.

If there is more than one +12V rail, add them up. For example, a power
supply with two +12V rails, both rated at 15A would be perfect. That would
be 30A on the +12V rail.

The only other thing to look for is to make sure that your power supply has
all the right connectors for both your mainboard AND video card (most video
cards need at least one power connection directly from the power supply
now).

The following looks like it should handle your system just fine, and is very
reasonably priced for a good name-brand power supply. Note dual +12V rails
at 20A each. Nice. -Dave
