Re-assigning drives.

David

I have installed a new 40Gb hard-drive as the Primary Master.
My old hard-drive which still has XP on it is now the Secondary Master and
my CD-ROM Drive is the Secondary Slave.

However, when my new XP Home starts (it's installed on the 40Gb drive) and I
open Explorer, it shows this drive as E:, my old drive as C: and the CD-ROM
as D:!

How can I re-assign the drives so my 40Gb is C: etc

Thanks for your attention and any help you can give me.

HOW TO: Change Drive Letter Assignments in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307844

The MS 307844 procedure does not change the drive letter for the primary
bootable partition which, I believe, is what the original poster's question
was about. I have not tried out the following but there is a post (drive
C=D? How do I change it back?) dated 7/13 which contains a procedure that
sounds promising. I'll paste it below.
FYI- It occurs to me that even though Windows may change the boot drive
assignment, many of the program references may still contain the old drive
paths. (I don't know - just guessing) Partition Magic 8 has a module which
goes through the registry and changes all the references from old_drive:\ to
new_drive:\ You may be able to go through the registry yourself and make
these changes. My point is, even if the procedure below works, you still may
not be out of hot water yet. -JCH

- Change Disk Drive Letters
First you must remember that you CANNOT change the letter for the
boot drive if it contains the PAGEFILE.SYS (swap file) and/or
HIBERFILE.SYS(hibernate file).
To move pagefile.sys use Control Panel | System | Advanced tab |
Settings
under Performance | Advanced tab again | Virtual Memory and CHANGE
button. set the drive you want to move FROM to NO Paging File and click on
SET.
set the drive you want to move TO and click SET.
to disable hiberfile.sys use Control Panel | Power Options Hibernate tab.
THEN REBOOT and
Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk
Management under Storage, then RIGHT click on the drive letter to change
and select the Change Letter option.

THEN following the first procedure set the PAGEFILE.SYS back to the
drive it was on originally.

XP automatically adjusts the registry for the drive letter changes.
