Re. Activation of windows xp

Have used this one computer for three years, today when I started, it
ask, to many hardware changes, u must activate xp.

No hardware changes, It activated without a hitch. Via internet.

Question, why did it ask? The only thing can think of that might caused
it, I disabled nic card to use a wireless, to test. Would this cause it.?
