I am preparing to build a 2003 active directory domain, I have

fine. DNS contains all the SRV records and PTR records that it should
require.

Dcdiag passes all test's but if I run Netdiag I keep geeting an error
about the WINS registrations -

NetBT name test. . . . . . . . . . : Passed
[WARNING] You don't have a single interface with the <00>
'WorkStation Service', <03> 'Messenger Service', <20> 'WINS' names
defined.

I get this whether TCP/IP is registered with a WINS server or not
(the WINS server is windows 2000 though).

Would this cause me any problems? I expect so for netbios resolution.

Does anybody know of a way of manually registering these settings or
what may be causing the problem.

Thanks in advance

Is NetBIOS disabled on the interface?

Thanks for the quick response Ace, as far as I am aware the tcp/ip is set to
use netbios over ip. I have included the full results of the netdiag command

I'm not at work so I will post the nbstat -n tomorrow. Whats interesting
though is that when that netdiag was taken there were no wins server
settings, even with a wins server entry the results are the same?

regards

Funny how it says "WINS" record and you're not using WINS.
When you do a nbtstat -n, what do you get? Post it back please.

Can WINs on NT4 register all the settings needed for 2003? If not I
take it I will need to run WINS on one of the 2003 machines? If that
is the case will it replicate properly with NT4 Wins Servers, I hope
this will only be short term whilst we manage our rollout.

Please find the files that contain the output from netdiag, nbtstat
-n and the entries that exist for the server on Wins server (NT4)

It appears that it is the <03> messenger server is the only missing
entry if I'm reading netdiag and the WINS entrys right.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon, thanks for posting that info.

Oh, didn't realize you were using NT4 WINS. Not sure if it's compatible, but
wouldn't see why not. But after seeing what problems you're having, I would
*really* suggest to try to go to the latest version (w2k3) if at all
possible. You can give it a shot and see what happens. Maybe you can make a
static entry for it?

It will be easy to go to Win2003 WINS. Just install it on a machine. It
doesn't have to be a DC, just any Win2003 server. You would of course have
to change the WINS IP in your machines and in your DHCP scope, but it's
really not too big of a hassle, if you guys can do it. I just installed a
new remote location for one of my clients today and got WINS up and running
at the location. In about 5 minutes we were able to browse the whole
infrastructure. I would say out of all the services, WINS seems to be the
easiest to get going.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Ace

I am now feeling quite stupid. After some thought and proper investigation I
found that the messenger service was disabled it's no wonder that <03>
wasn't registering in WINS. Once I enabled the messenger service, it worked
fine (what a surprise).

I can't actually remember disabling the service so i'm assuming that 2003
disables it by default?

Thanks for all your help

Simon

Ah, interesting, of course that will kill it. Please don't feel stupid.
We've all been there with minor mistakes. I imagine you may have killed that
service trying to stop the net send popups?
