hi people out there, have a problem wondering any1 able to solve..

situation
enabled firewall for my internet connection
allowed only 1 user with permission to access remote desktop on my pc from my workplace
shared a folder for copying and file transfering purpose

problem
RDC works, able to connect back to control my pc bu
file sharing not able, i should be able to connect to my share folders by typing in IE \\ipaddr but somehow it don not allow

question
how come when there are 2 pc with firewall file sharing is not allowed wherelse if only 1 pc has firewall, the \\ipaddr will work?

i have tried tis with many friends of mine and the conclusion is when 2 pc are firewalled, there is no way to see the share folders

Well, if you can open Remote Desktop on your home machine from your office you can simply open "My
Computer" on the remote PC desktop and access files on either PC if Remote Desktop is configured
correctly. Before connecting configure the client for drive redirection. Then once the connection is
made using RD simply cut-n-paste/drag-n-drop files/folders between folders on the local and/or
remote PC.

hi,

wat if i do not use RDC, just drop tat.
a simple connection to the other pc should only be \\ipaddr which always works if only 1 of the pc is firewalled.
but if both pc were firewalled then the \\ipaddr cannot work, why is that so?

To do that you need to setup a VPN not use Remote Desktop. Look at these pages for help setting up a
VPN...

hi sooner,

thanks but i am still looking for a solution for my problem i have yet to solve since few months back.

to my knowledge i know that from both computers that are win xp, they can see each other's share files just by typing in the \\ipaddr in the internet explorer browser. tried and worked. so i can see the shares easily.

but the catch is if only either 1 of the computers are with firewall or none of the computers with firewall.

if both computers were to have firewall, the shares will not show. ??

think i have made my question simplified. ;p

hi

instead of using VPN which requires configuration at both sides, 1 as the server and the other as the client dial in, i would actually prefer to make it simple

the shared folders should appear if i type in the ip address in IE. ( \\ipaddress if u know what i mean
do i call this peer to peer or something? cos it works everytime if i just type in the address and see all the shares

i'm not looking for another solution to connect to the share folders, just a solution for this connection

thanks

You don't want to do this over the internet... You especially do not
want to make File and Print Sharing available over the internet. Very
bad things can happen to your computer and your data if you leave
these ports open...

That is why Al was suggesting a VPN or using Remote Desktop... In
addition, there are new plugins for UltraVNC that support file
transfer..
