Hi,

I would like to know that if my computer is not running correctly could it
be due to rays (sun, gamma, etc.). Someone told me that the rays could affect
the computer, and that it would be a good idea to keep the computer from
constantlly being in front of a window. How true is this. If there is any
truth to this, can you suggest a good website to visit.

Thank you in advance

Laptop computers are used everyday outdoors so
I don't believe "sun, gamma, etc" rays are of any issue.

I think its gamma rays that can wreak havoc. At sea level the incidence is
around zero. As altitude is increased the incidence increases due to the
reducing filtering of the atmosphere.

At 10,000 feet electronics needs to be shielded. At considerably greater
altitudes gamma rays will cause issue with unshielded electronics.

A gamma ray is like a bowling ball - when it hits a smiconductor 'path' or
junction the ray (particle) can demolish a 'wire' in a chip ==> chip
failure. The higher the altitude and the longer the time of exposure the
greater the chance of electronic fault.

Modern ciruits are designed with this in mind.

Unless you live somewhere like Mt Hagen town in Papua New Guinea (10 or 12
thousand feet above sea level), you won't experience issues at all. If ever
you get the chance, drive up there from Lae. Its a beautiful drive and very
interesting although quite dangerous.
