How does ranish partition manager compare the proprietary offerings?
Will partitionmagic or partitionexpert do anything that ranish will
not?

I have never tried Ranish, but Partition Magic is supposed to
resize existing FAT and NTFS partitions without losing the data.

Ranish is a partition manager that does its job very well but it needs
some knowledge of hard disk partitioning. Using it you can resize
partitions in an indirect way. Once you master this utility you can
play around a lot with it - I use my hard disks even when they develop
bad sectors !

A really good tool for resizing partitions is Partition Resizer by
Zeleps. This utility can handle very large disks too but your machine
may not!
