range of values

I am very new to Access and am having difficulty doing the following:

In an access table, I have a set of approximately 3000 tree diameters from
300 plots. I want to classify the diameters into increments of 2, and then
count the number of values in each class for all plots measured. My finished
table should look like this:

Plot 0-2 3-4 5-6 7-8
29 1 2 5 0
30 0 4 9 1

From this data I want to calculate and sum several more values, using the
frequency numbers generated.

Please, someone show silly grasshoppa the Way of the Database.

The table has the following fields (columns):
Plot number, species, Diameter, height, crown height, and a dominance
rating. the fields are all numerical, except species and dominance.

Because there are multiple trees per plot, the field 'plot number' has many
duplicates, ie it is not unique. the number of trees per plot vary from none
to 25 or so. and there are approximately 330 plots.

Thanks for any help you can provide! I am trying to learn Access, but Excel
is still much easier for me.
