I just bought a used laptop. It's recently been upgraded
to WinXP from Win 98SE. At random times within the first
15 minutes of being logged on to the net I get this
message: "System is shutting down in 60 secs due to
Remote Procedure call by NT authority". Then it shuts
down! What is this and what can I do about it? Thank you
to all that reply.

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan worm.

It entered your computer through your internet connection because the
"firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates were not installed
from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing the problem, visit:

Remove W32.MSBlast.Worm

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

you know, that sounds alot like that Blaster worm virus.
You may have had it in your system, and when you upgraded
to an NT based system, the worm emerged. But, that is my
Un-professional opinion.

The Blaster virus is still active enough that if a person is going to install Windows XP or Window 2000 they need to download the Blaster patch and have it available to install before connecting to the Internet unless they have an adequate firewall. Otherwise, even if the first thing a person does is go to Windows Update to download and install that patch, there is a very good chance they will be infected before that process completes.

To me it sounds like you got the blaster virus, get the
patch via microsoft website. This should fix your problem.
