Random Pauses in Windows Vista

I didn't see this specific problem posted in your discussion group, so here
goes:

I have Windows Vista Home Premium running on the following hardware.

DFI LANParty UT CFX3200-DR/G Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 (2x 1GB DDR SDRAM DIMMs), 2-3-3-6 latency
Antec Neo HE 550 Power Supply
PNY Verto GeForce 8600 GTS with 256 MB of DDR3 RAM
Western Digital WD1600JSRTL SATA 300 MB/s Hard Drive (x 2)
Belkin 5-Port PCI USB 2.0 Card
LG GSA-H10L Lightscribe DVD Burner
Iomega Internal Zip Drive 250

I'm experiencing random pauses in Windows Vista that last about six seconds
each. They are most frequent when using the system after coming out of
standby. After extended use, they seem to diminish but not disappear
entirely. Only after a system restart do they appear to cease altogether
until the next I bring the computer out of standby.

The numerous logs and monitors in Windows Vista are chock-full of data but
none that means anything to me. Has anyone else experienced this problem and,
more importantly, devised or learned of a solution? Many thanks for your
assistance!

Regards,

Ron

There's ususally a culprit process involved that's hogging cpu.

If you fire up Task Manager [ctrl-shift-esc] and click on 'Show processes
from all users'

and look at the 'CPU' and 'CPU Time' columns (addable via View > Columns if
necessary), you can discover any wayward process involved.

Then it's a question of dealing with that particular process.

The only process that appears to be utilizing a significant amount of CPU
processing and time is the System Idle Process, which is in the 90%+ range.
As I was typing this, the system froze for a few seconds and, upon
resumption, the CPU usage dropped to 70% before going back up to the
mid-to-high 90s. Does this tell you anything, because I don't know what to
make of this information. Thanks!

Ron

The 'System Idle Process' corresponds to your computer being idle - ie when
things are working correctly and the computer is twiddling its thumbs, so to
speak. The higher the figure that is, the better.

It'll be the process just below that one in either the CPU or CPU Time
column that will be the one hogging the CPU and that you'd need to be
concerned about.
