random loss of internet connection

My internet connection is randomly lost It happens intermitantly when ever I am on the internet, some times within 1 minute of connecting sometimes within 1 hour. To reconnect I have to open explorer or outlook. I am using a land line and modem. My ISP tell me it is a software problem on my side but all my settings are default

The internet connection is also lost when ever I go to a secure website and when ever I try to download windows updates

Any ideas?

Is your computer on the same line as your phone? If so go to control panel modem tab and check to see what your call waiting option is. If the phone rings while you are on line sometimes it will disconnect your internet connection.
