I've been experiencing random interruptions of the active window/active app.
Incidents seem to occur anywhere from 4 seconds apart to over a minute apart
and are only halted by clicking the mouse. The window just goes grey and
functionality stops.

This can be an email window, a web page, Excel sheet.. anything. No clue
what's causing it. Would love to hear some suggestions!

tnx

the system:

WinXPsp2
160g HDD
1.5meg RAM
94% free
IE6, FF1.5
NIS
various other stuff that I seriously doubt are contributing to the issue.

Yes. Have cleared cache, temp files, history, run full AV scans, etc.

When a window goes gray or otherwise lightens in color, that means it's
no longer the active window. Another window has 'stolen the focus' and
become the active window.

So, which window(s) is/are stealing the focus and then, when their work
is done, returning focus to your application? I'll bet you can't tell
just by looking, but here's a way to find out:

Start Task Manager and set it to stay 'on top of other windows' so
you'll always see it. Go to the Processes tab and sort them from high
(the process taking the most CPU time) to low. Now, the next time the
window you're working in loses focus, look over at Task Manager. Which
process or processes are taking up most of the CPU's time?
