random failure of USB ports

Hello,

I have a Dell Dimension 9200. It suffers from random USB port failure. For
no apparent reason, one or all USB ports just stop working. If I am lucky, I
still have mouse, so I can go to device manager and uninstall the drivers,
which sometimes gets everything working after restart. But if I lose the
mouse, all I can do is switch the computer on and off from the mains switch
until eventually one port recovers.

I have reinstalled BIOS and Chipset. Is there anything else I can try?

Open Device Manager, open the properties on each "USB Root Hub" entry,
click the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this
device to save power".

Check power saving options for USB devices in device manager.

Did you try to unplug the mouse, then scan for hardware changes in device
manager. Plug mouse back in and scan again.
I assume your keyboard still works.

I had a similar problem recently after installing iTunes. My Microsoft
Wireless keyboard and mouse would suddenly stop working. After a quick
search through the iTune forums, one suggestion solved the problem. I
disabled the Service, Bonjour, which had been installed along with iTunes.
