Hi

I have 2 CD and 2 HD wired as follows:
1 primary master : 40GB HD normally C:
2 primary slave : CD Burner normally E:
3 sec master : 20 GB HD normally D:
4 sec slave : CD reader normally F:

I just reinstalled XP pro on a clean HD. (C:)
Now the drives appear to be 1->C: 2->D: 3->F: 4->E:

Why and how can I restore the drives letters as they were ?

It's the second clean instal I do in a row. The first one was even worse !
The boot drive was F: !!!!
I've been told to unplug my drive 3 (20GB) and do the install, it was a bit
better but these's still a mess.

Thanks

Open Disk management, change "D" to "G", then change the others, then
change "G", leave "C" alone. More assistance see Help and Support, Disk
Management.

Hi all
I am haing the same problem.
Please let me know how to open the Disk Management. I have no clue :-(

Thnaks & Regards
Lucky

Thanks Pegasus

Why XP is messing the letters like that ? I could have understood if it
assigned the letters according to the physical connections but scrambled
like it did !!!

Thanks again

Problem is diskmanagement shows letters for the harddisk but not for CD
drive. I am unable to change drive letter for CD ROM

Thanks

Hi Pegasus,
I ran the diskmgmt.msc and changed the CD drive letters. I restarted
the system and now it can't open the CD. I again checked the Computer
management and here I can't see any folder below removable storage.
When I double click on my CD it says insert new disk, when I insert any
disk it's unable to open that and end with "Not Responding".

I can't understand this? DO you have nay idea?
Thanks & Regards
Lucky

Either your CD drive is marginal or defective, or the CD
you use is marginal or defective.

In this situation it is better to disconnect the second HDD and CDROM
drives before doing the OS install, this will ensure that the boot HDD
will be C:. After the install is complete add the other drives and asign
the letters in Disk Managment as the other replies indicate as you want
them to appear.
