I have just upgraded my RAM to 4096MB (4 x 1024MB). But Windows Vista only
reports 3326MB. Can someone explain why only 3326MB is reported by Windows
Vista???

afaik only 64bit versions of vista can address 4gb or more. 4gb is no
problem for vista ultimate x64. dunno about x64 home, business etc.
have no idea about 32bit versions, they seem to be limited so your mileage
may vary (2.5-3.5 gb).

this report is normal.. dont worry about it...

now if you are asking why this happens... it is limitation of 32 bit os to
handle more than one peice of 4 gigs of memory at the same time.
64 bit OS can handle far more memory .. and you will never reach the limit,
(perhaps we will but it will take years)

Other server 32 bit OS can address more memory, by having the memory in 4gb
chunks.. but they still cannot address more than 4 gigs simultainously.

oh.. the reason why you have less than 4 gigs... is that other parts of the
computer need to address that memory space, so those parts of the memory
cannot be released to be used by your programs...

You might consider switching to 64 bit in the future (but not yet though)

Thak you for your comments; now I know the reason, so thank you again.

A 32-bit system can only address 4GB total address space, some of that
address space gets used for hardware in the machine, and as such can't all
be used to address all of the RAM.

Going forward the solution is to ensure you've got a motherboard, CPU, etc
that supports 64-bit, and the 64-bit version of Windows.

Vista 32 bit supports 4 gig of RAM however your hardware will use some of
this space for i/o and video memory mapping.

My ThinkPad came stock with 1GB and with Vista 64 bit it runs a
little...sluggish. Tomorrow I am having an additional 2GB installed.
How is your speed with 3GB? I am hoping for a big improvement.

Can someone explain to me why the 1.3 Million responses this question on
google search aren't already enough?
