RAM: Still have memory test errors after replacing chips

Random lockups led me to download and run a RAM test utility that showed
errors. I bought expensive new RAM chips and reran the RAM test for peace of
mind. I still have similar memory errors...only late in the "extended" tests
on the ERAND test in what look to me like high memory locations (out of 2
GB).

It's unlikely that every RAM chip I buy is defective. What would generate
memory test errors if not a defective memory chip?
- a defective processor ?
- a defective motherboard, or a short somewhere ?

Thank you for your input! I'm not sure where to look next.

Test the RAM in another machine. If it is OK, then you know the issue is
on your motherboard, which will need to be replaced.

Clean your ram scokets and insert your ram in and out several times to make
good connection.

Yes, or an overheating one. Given that the errors are happening late,
that is worth considering. It could easily cause your lockups, too.
Check that all the fans work and blow out all the dust.

Also yes, bad ram slots have been known to happen. Apple had a recall
on notebooks with this issue.

Alot of pcs cannot run 1 & 2 sidded ram sticks together and/or in alot of
cases single sided ram simply doesnt work.Change the sticks around, first run
only 1 at a time, run the test with microsoft memory tester as it tests both
the
ram & controller,download it to a MS-DOS formatted floppy,boot to floppy,i
think it runs off a cd too.http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Also, clear the CMOS,locate the jumper pin on the MB,remove the battery, set
from 1-2 to 2-3 for .30 sec or so,then back to 1-2,replace battery.You'll
need to
reset basic BIOS settings on start-up.....
