Hi All

Just wan't to ask why does windows vista take up so much RAM Memory on my
PC?

From Lee

hi lee
vista is a big os and will always use alot of ram as all big programs
do. are you experiencing problems running vista?and how much ram have you got
?.vista is recomended to run on 1gb minimum it is advised to use 2gb .when i
recently bought my new laptop it came with 1gb running vista home premium i
have just upgraded to 2gb and what a difference it makes

Free RAM has no value to a computer that is powered up.. Vista allocates as
much RAM as the processes running will allow..

That's right. Lee, Google "Superfetch", because that is part of what's
using your RAM.

Hi All

Thanks Marty for your answer, i had 512mb RAM already in my PC and i bought
an extra two 1gb Ram memory sticks. With the 512 i was experiencing probs
like certain programs or internet pages would not start properly make my
moniter flash black and white.
Anyway its all fixed now but for anyone with vista who has got the same prob
it is recomended not to use The Windows Vista Sidebar on the desktop as this
uses alot of RAM, secondly get some more ram memory sticks, you can get as
cheat a £5 for 512mb or about £10-£20 for a 1 or 2 gb.

Yea, Vista actually uses the cpu resources available instead of them sitting
there idle waiting for something like a game to use them. I just built a new
PC with 4gb of ram and installed Vista64 on it.

Because that is how it is designed.

You may want to look into Windows 3.1x.

It is quiet happy with 4 Megs of RAM, and runs great with 8 Megs RAM.

same reason it take up so much HD hard drive space. go ask the
department of redundancy department.

You guys are so not funny. In fact, some of the things you all say are quite
rude, and it's a wonder people still come to get help here. I'm posting this
in the hopes I'll get help, instead of comments like those....

When I bought my laptop in February of this year (2007) it came with Windows
Vista home Premium preinstalled on it. With the exception of the occassional
crash (and 2 full Manufacturer's default reinstalls) I've had no problems
with it... however for the last couple of months, I'll have a few windows
open (Including Yahoo Messenger, and Internet Explorer 7) and all of a
sudden, no menus will work, grouped window buttons won't display when you
click on them, or new windows/tabs appear totally blank. The way I've seen to
fix it is by closing some windows, then trying again.

I thought at first that this might be a problem with the amount of free RAM
I have, but when I checked, I still have over 300MB free. Any ideas?

Hi, Jason.

There are no doorkeepers in these Microsoft public newsgroups, so we never
know who is going to wander in. And some of them are jokers and misfits who
just love to irritate other people. The best thing is not to berate them
(they LOVE that!), but to ignore them and focus on why you came here in the
first place. Eventually, they get bored and go to some more responsive
group.

About your problem...

It doesn't sound like a RAM shortage to me - but, then, you didn't say how
much RAM your computer has. Vista is sluggish with 512 MB (I've heard) but
performs quite well with 1 GB. You COULD tell us the actual make and model
of your computer; someone here probably is familiar with that model and can
offer some specific insight.
With the exception of the occassional
crash (and 2 full Manufacturer's default reinstalls) I've had no problems
with it...

That somehow reminds me of the famous one-liner, "Other than that, how was
the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" You should not have had any crashes with Vista,
especially in a machine that had it pre-installed, and 2 full reinstalls
sound excessive for sure. If that machine is still in warranty, return it!

Vista does a lot of processing in the background, especially after it is
first installed. For a few days, it is busy building the index so that it
can respond quickly to the Search command. It may be running the
defragmenter in the background, and there may be other tasks running, too,
depending on the software you have installed and how YOU use your computer.
Although they run in the background, it may take a noticeable amount of time
to switch to your foreground task. The indexing and other activities
usually get completed within a week and the interruptions are much less
after that.

Are ALL your drivers up to date? For a pre-installed Vista, they should be;
Dell or HP or whoever was the manufacturer should have made sure of that.
Contact their Tech Support or visit their website to see what your computer
might be missing.

Tell us more about your hardware and we may be able to give you more
specific ideas.

My computer is a Toshiba Satalite A135-S4407
Processor is Intel Pentium Dual-Core. Each core runs at 1.6 ghtz
1GB of RAM
100GB Hard drive (40GB free)
Intel Mobile Video Graphics Accelorator
Realtech Integrated audio
Operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista home Premium (32 bit)

the crashes were usually due to program incompatibilities, or me trying to
add new hardware that was not compatible. The 1st reinstall was needed when I
did something that screwed up my Vista installation, and everything crashed.
The 2nd was when I got hacked through my network. All of that was my fault,
and so no reason for me to return the PC.

As for how I use the computer, I use it to play games, browse the internet,
chat, email, and write. I also use it to help troubleshoot other PCs remotely
(A skill I seem to be good at) I am no beginner with PC's (Especially Windows
PC's) My problem has nothing to do with the indexing service. It is not a
delay (which is what it would be if it were something like the indexing
service) no... this is literally blank items appearing, or menus simply not
working until I close something. I've never seen this occur before on any PC
at all.

All of my drivers are completely up to date, and I have installed ALL of the
windows updates for Windows Vista.

Have you tried disabling all of the menu animations (menu fade, slide,
etc.). Also, window animations when minimizing and maximizing should be
disabled to free up a little more memory; that might help as well.

This is not a memory issue. If it were a memory issue, then it would've
happened long before now, and my memory would be low, or out... I appreciate
the idea though :-)

Hi, Jason.

Thanks for the additional information and background. With that, someone
here should have some ideas for you.

I'm not a gamer, and I've had no experience with viruses or other malware
coming over the Internet, so I'm probably not your best resource.

I'm guessing it has something to do with some program I have installed... but
I have no idea what it could be... only other thing I could think of is
something to do with the video card... I'll continue investigating my
settings to see if I can't find the issue.
