Is there a big difference with 2 HD in raid setup???

wondering if i should get another maxtor 80Gb and put it on raid

raid0 is the setup that add 2 x 80 Gb HD to make a big 160 Gb right??

if i put it on raid will i be able to backup my HD image with ghost??

current setup is Asus p4p800-E-DX with 80Gb maxtor SATA and a WD 80GB ATA
for backup

around a 25% speed increase in raid0 from sandra benchmarks.

Yes, raid0 spreads the data between the disks, which is why you get a speed
increase. Raid1 mirrors the data of a disk onto another disk(s) for data
security, i.e. in raid0 if you loose a disk you loose everything, in raid1
your data is safe if you loose a disk .

Yes, ghost works fine - back up everything that you value, and test the
backups, as stated above if you loose a disk you loose the lot. With the
dependability of disks being pretty crap over the last year or two working
backups are critical for raid0.

Ditto, I have a similar setup and get around 45mb/s sustained speed with
lower cpu utilisation as opposed to around 25-30 with a single drive (using
HDTach). Apparently the raid controller takes the load of the cpu while
transferring data giving you better multitasking capability.

To set up the array you need to wipe both drives, set up the array and mode
via the raid bios at bootup then fdisk the combined space as normal. You
will also need to load the drivers on a floppy and use them when xp asks for
them during install.

Overall I think its definitely worth the effort...

on the board wich one should i use??

ICH5R South Bridge:
-2 x UltraDMA 100/66/33
-2 x Serial ATA, RAID 0,1 function

or

Promise 20378 RAID controller:
-1 x UltraDMA 133 support two hard drives
-2 x Serial ATA
-RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, Multiple RAID


1 more question , let say i have my OS installer on 1 x 60Gb HD and when i
setup my RAID with 2 x 80Gb HD can i ghost the 60Gb OS into the RAID setup
or i need to re-install the OS from scratch??

You would have to check around the newsgroups to see which one gives the
best performance. Obviously one requires 2 sata drives and the other 2 ata
drives.

I suppose once you have setup the array and set up your partitions with
fdisk or whatever then you should be able to ghost from your normal drive to
the raid array. Hopefully when you boot from raid windows will ask you for
the raid drivers ?

Personally I like to start from scratch but hey why waste time if you have a
good ghost image ?
