Raid 0

Got a Laptop and 2 External Harddisks (connected via USB 2.0). Wanted to
connect those 2 External Harddisks via Raid 0. Went to the Disk Management
System and right-clicked the Disk Description Pane per the instruction at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323433. Unfortunately, the "Upgrade to
Dynamic Disk" option is not available. I get only two options to select from
in the drop down box: Properties & Help.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it not possible to connect 2 External
Harddisks via Raid 0? Please note that I am aware of the risk of loosing one
of the discs under a Raid 0 setup - that will be covered under a separate
backup strategy.

Whats the point, raid 0 is designed for performance, and yet you propose to
impliment it via usb

Googling it has indeed crossed my mind - as a matter of fact, I have spent
hours researching the topic before posting my question.

Personally, I have come to the conclusion that it does not seem to be
possible to connect two external harddisks to a Laptop using RAID 0 (at
least not without any additional hardware). I was hoping that somebody could
proof me wrong and provide information how it could still be done.

Well, the best I can currently connect to my Laptop are two external USB
harddisks. Obviously, I could use them both separately.

However, my thought was that if I could combine them via RAID 0, I would be
able to increase the writing speed (since I am now writing to 2 harddisks at
the same time). I would be happy to accept the increased risk of loosing
data (i.e. if one of the disks fails, everything goes).

The write speed via usb 2 may only be in the order of 7mb/sec, whereas a
directly connected sata2 can be many times that, so by using a usb
connection you create a bottleneck
