RadeOn 7000 Series : system hangs issue under Win98SE.

Hello,

I precise that I tried with drivers shipped on CD in the box and with the
downloaded latest Catalyst drivers
bundle(wme-catalyst-7-91-030625a-010027c-efg).

I am having troubles using my "brand new" ATI RadeOn 7000 Series (no kind of
joking, but my "old" ASUS P2B rev 1012 mobo only supports 2x AGP at all, so
this is the ultimate solution). The system hangs not really after a few
minutes (ATi's official issue, just after "black screen" on website/support)
but as I am using any video ressource other than 2D, I guess. I noticed
using part of Bill's Office suite doesn't make any trouble at all. It seems
that any call to DirectX 6/7/8.1, even video ones, leads to hang. What am I
gonna hang today... ;-)

First I believed that the clock frequency that animate my old PII/333 which
used to run safe @448Mhz for 4 years, with brilliant jumpers settings, was
the cause of the trouble. You know about ratios between clock and bus
frequencies that must fit into compliant values to run. I made tons of
combinations, but no success. I used to run ATI Xpert Play 98 combinated
with 3Dfx I then II, for five years with no trouble about performance loss
or hang.

Last detail that is making me sure that marvelous
hyper-everywhere-everything 15 megs DirectX library is guilty, is that
Mandrake 9.0 penguin did set it up in a snap, and shows me AVI videos
without any trouble...

Understand anything ? I don't.
Any help would be appreciated. ;-)

Did you fully uninstall your old video drivers? No really TOTALLY uninstall
all old video drivers and fully install standard VGA driver. Then and only
then install your ATI card and it's driver package. I've had best Win98SE
success with DX8.1 and no newer than Cat 3.1 drivers, in fact the old 7075
driver package is very stable.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for replying. Can you explain what you want to say exactly with
"fully uninstall"? I know about classic uninstall, with removing ATI's
drivers bundle from add/remove program icon in control panel, but I think it
is most I can do, ain't it ? I dit it, because it was written in some ATI
website-support article, in vain.
A few more information or idea ?

Go to www.rage3d.com and search the forums for "clean driver install"

It involves a search-and-destroy hunt through the drive and registry, but
often works when nothing else does.
