I found the icon of QuickTime in my systems tray; I assume that means
something is constantly running. Do I want that? I view a lot of news
articles, hate unwanted ads that arrive uninvited (like Forbes), and never
call upon QuickTime intentionally to do anything.

If you don't want to see it in the system tray:-
Right-Click on the icon>Preferences>Browser Plugin
from the drop down >Uncheck "QuickTime system tray icon" checkbox.

Disable it. You dont need it running 24/7.

In Control Panel, go to the QuickTime applet, select Browser Plug-in from
the pull down menu.
Uncheck Quick Time system tray icon.

I initially disabled this through msconfig, so I don't know if this just
removes the icon or stops the program from running at start-up.

If you go the control panel route, run Task Manager to see if the QuickTime
program is still in running.

I use Spybot to monitor any registry changes, and each time I view a QT
movie on a website, QT tries to re-insert this program into the start-up.

HTH.
