Quite a Few Questions!!

Ok, here we go

1) For 100% of the time whenever I click 'New' I want a blank document. Is there any way I could have it come up by default w/out having to select it each time

2) If I am 'saving as' a document for the first time and naming it, and my cursor hovers over another document name, Word automatically inputs that document name into the 'Save as' space. Any way to disengage that 'feature'

3) Somehow I put in 'comfort blue' as the default color for my new documents and now can't seem to get rid of it! Wld appreciate help on this one also

Thanks very much in advance.

Hi

1) use the New icon rather than file / new (little piece of paper - top
toolbar left hand side)
2) not sure - but if the doc name is blue (highlighted) just starting to
type will get rid of it so you can call it what you like (ie, start typing,
don't CLICK in the file name box)
3) not sure where you've put your comfort blue in? - font colour /
background colour ?????

Hope this helps

Cheers

Add the 'New' command to the toolbar. This starts a document from the
normal.dot (blank) template. You will get a lot more out of Word if you
create specific templates for different document types.
2) If I am 'saving as' a document for the first time and naming it,
and my cursor hovers over another document name, Word automatically
inputs that document name into the 'Save as' space. Any way to

Word offers a default name - it should not be affected by a hovering cursor.

Tools > options > general - uncheck blue background.

Thank you very much for your help. A cpl of comments/further info:

1)The 'new document' icon helps tremendously.
2) Yes, I am aware that Word offers a default name when saving a doc (a great feature) but if I am in a subfolder and my cursor is hovering over a doc in that subfolder, the actual default name of the document changes to the name of the document I'm hovering over! On a related issue, when in the sub-folders box I get the screentip pop-up although I have unchecked it in both customize>options for the toolbar and under options>view. Any way to disable it when looking at sub-folders (for ex. when I'm saving a doc)? Perhaps that wld help in the document name changing problem.
3) The 'blue background, white text' option in General is unchecked. The blue I'm talking about is under the extensive list of color backgrounds which is offered somewhere (unfortunately I havent been able to find it but am still looking). There are about 20 different colors available, with some of them having 'cute' names, i.e. comfort blue or something to that effect. Unfortunately as I mentioned I can't seem to locate that section yet and have been unsuccessful in getting the default back to white. Any info re: these color selection backgrounds wld be appreciated.

Again, many thanks.

BIW,
Just a thought, could it be "Format" - "Background" - there are a lot of
colours there, just select white and you should be allright. It is strange
though that you can't get rid of it as it only applies to the current
document, unless you added it to normal.dot.
cheers

Hovering over a name in the file list doesn't change the default name to the
name hovered over in any version of Word that I've used, on a Mac or Intel
system. If you click on a name in the file list, that does replace the
suggestion for a name. I use this feature extensively in most of my
applications, not just Word.

The blue background is a Windows display option, not set in Word.

1. Unless you've removed it (or have adaptive menus/toolbars still enabled),
the first icon on your Standard toolbar should be the New button, which runs
the FileNewDefault command, which gives you a new blank document.

2. As others have mentioned, there's no way just hovering the mouse over a
file will change the suggested filename.

3. Go to Windows | Control Panel | Display | Appearance (or right-click on
the desktop and choose Properties) and change the color scheme (or at least
change the window color to white).

Hate to disagree but, oh yes it can.

I have the same feature here - win2k word 2002 - but I reckon its because I have my folder options set up to 'single click to open an item (point to select)' - so hovering over a filename moves the focus and presto chango - its naught to do with Word this time tho :

Thank you Reg! I was beginning to feel like Galileo when he whispered 'but the earth DOES revolve around the sun!
Prior to reading your reply I was also thinking that it was more of a Windows function as opposed to a Word function. This was due to funny things happening while looking at files in explore (such as files being 'selected' while I also just hovered over them). So I tried your suggestion of changing to double-clicking for folder selection and it seemed to have done the trick. Many thanks

Btw, as I inquired before, is there any way to get rid of the screentips when hovering over sub-folders in Word? As I mentioned I have unchecked them in two places but they are still very much an annoyance

Also, thank you Luc for your suggestion. As you mentioned, I went into background a checked 'no fill' but I still get the blue background when I click new document, so there is definately a default of that somewhere. That is not, however, where I got the blue from, as where I got it there was descriptive text for each color (e.g. 'comfort blue' or something to that effect). I will continue to look for that. In the meantime, perhaps I inadvertantly did save it to normal.dot per your thought. I'm afraid I don't know how to get in there to check so any further directions as to getting to normal.dot would be appreciated.

If this gets posted twice I apologise - whilst figuring something out my original reply disappeared

Glad it helped - you might find the tooltips is similarly a property of your folder settings, - look in folder options, view, 'show pop-up descriptions ......'

As for the blue background - you might have a look at 'format themes' although I don't see a 'comfort blue' on my set-up. If this is the dialogue you remember it must have been inadvertently applied to Normal.dot

To open Normal.dot you need to find it - its location is defined in Tools, Options, File Locations then click on user templates and press modify if you can't see the whole thing. On my set-up its in c:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\templates

Alternatively do a search with Explorer

Once you know where it is close word, navigate to Normal.dot with explorer then right click the file and choose Open. you can modify normal.dot (change themes, etc) and then save and close it

Assuming that is where the problem lay you might consider starting again with a new Normal.dot so any other mistaken changes are dropped as well. Just close word, rename Normal.dot to oldNormal.dot and then restart word and a new one will be created with all the defaults. Any styles. autotext, macros, etc you want to preserve can then be copied piecemeal from oldnormal.dot

Either way go to tools, options, save and make sure the 'prompt to save normal.dot' box is checked so that in future changes to normal.dot have to be confirmed

Reg, success on both fronts! The tooltip thing was solved in Windows. I'm afraid I use an alternative browser (Opera) and therefore am not accustomed to looking at Windows to fix things

And I have to admit tunnel vision re: the blue background because when I checked Format>theme it was right there! (Blue Calm is what it's called). Evidently I was focused in on Format>background and never went to theme. Pretty lame I admit. I just removed it as my default. Incidently,as I mentioned most of the colors in themes are given descriptive names. I am using Office 2003 (PE)

Thanks again for your insightful suggestions. I'm not crazy abt Word but at least you and the others have made it workable for me

Cheers
