Quit Streaming Downloading

I used to be able to do streaming download of mp3 music simply by
clicking the file on the internet but for some reason I can not do it
now. Instead the file starts being downloaded. I looked the settings
for IE6 and WMP9 but could not find anything wrong. I suspect that
something must have happened with IE6 which results in causing this
problem. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Kaz,

Under Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types tab, you will find the
associations for Windows and IE (assuming that that's your browser). You can
sort the list by Extension or by File Type, by clicking on the column header.
Edit the entry for streaming audio (look under "(NONE)" and "MP3") starting from
the Advanced button.

And Kaz, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address

Chuck,

I reviewed the file association as suggested but MP3 file is already associated with
Windows Media Player.
I appreciate your further suggestion if you have.

Thanks for your advice. I followed what the article says. But the problem in my case
is that I have to change my real email address to a dummy address every time I send
out email to newsgroup. I am presently using Netscape 4.78. Is there a email
client software which allows setting a dummy return address only for newsgroup
posting?

If you go to Folder Options, and hit the Advanced button for MP3, what is the
Default action? Is "Confirm open after download" selected? I have read in
other discussions that the Confirm selection can cause your problem.

I understand the frustration of using Usenet, and trying to figure out how to
post without exposing yourself to the dangers there. I used Google for posting
for a while, and got a lot of spam from the process. :-(

Under "Actions" are entries of "Open" and "Play", and no check mark is placed for
"Confirm open after download". I changed the system state to that of about two weeks ago
by using a restore point but to no avail. I would think that something must have
happened to the IE6. My attempt to reinstall IE6 was rejected because a newer version
exists according to an error message.

Kaz,

Which is default - Play or Open?

Chuck,

I have found that the culprit is a download manager which I was unknowingly using because it
was automatically installed when I installed Netscape. This solution is in a past thread of
MS newsgroup for WMP. I just uninstalled the download manager and streaming download now
works fine. The following is quote from the answer post to a question similar to mine:

IE and WMP don't allow WMP to stream the file if some other application
has the shell association. Since your download manager is trying to handle
the files, WMP lets it. If you want this to work right, just unset the
download manager's takeover of those types. =)

I thank you very much for your follow-up posts trying to help me solve the problem.
