Because they are not

(drumroll please...)

BETA Testers!

They are consumers, most of which have no clue what BETA means.
Consumer machines are not a test environment.

On the contrary, consumer machines are perfect for beta testing. After all
it is those machines the program will eventually be used on and the company
can get a wider opinion of what works and what doesn't. However if an end
user wants to use beta software they should be well prepared to accept the
downsides of using them and not complain it if messes up their machine.

Perfect for the software creator, not perfect for the clueless end user.

That's what conventional BETA testing programs are for. Springing a BETA
product on an ill-informed end user is devious to say the least. It's a
lazy way to get it tested en masse. There are plenty of willing people
to test software out there, there's no need to shove it in everyone's faces.

No kidding.

How are they shoving it in people's faces? They do not have to download it,
MS aren't doing a mass advertising enticing people to try it.

Try to update IE 5.x to 6.x online from MS. The BETA IE 7 is right there
in your face. You gotta _hunt_ for IE 6 anymore.

Would all you regulars who come here often please take part in this by
answering 3 simple questions with a yes or no answer to each.
1. have you downloaded ie7 beta? YES
2.has it caused you problems? YES
3. is it still on your system? NO

Continual problems with IE6, Outlook Express, Task Manager, PC freezes on
closing web page.
This is AFTER using sfc, disc check, system restore, microsoft update etc
I may have to reformat my hard drive completely.
Its causing far more grief than Windows Defender, and the answers above are
the same for WD.
