Use Outline Styles Heading 1 Heading 2 Modify but make sure you are only
running
1 Heading 1
1 Heading 2
2 Heading 1
2Heading 2
3 Heading 1
3Heading 2
etc.
If you need more styles in betwen start next set of numbering at Heading 6.
1 Heading 1
1 Heading 6
2 Heading 1
2 Heading 6
And so on.

Just the numbers? Use a drag fill in Excel then copy the numbers to Word.

no, actually the numbers will be in-line with text, and will go up pretty
high (into the hundreds). I gather I should use SEQ fields, and just
figuring out the syntax. Word 2007 Help doesn't seem to have anything, but I
think I got it.

Thanks!

In that case you need two SEQ fields with different identifiers, one for
each count.
