Quick Launch Icons Disappearing

I add icons to my Quick Launch taskbar so that I end up with about 6 icons. I
unlock and re-locked the taskbar so that I can view all 6 icons. When I
restart Windows two of the icons disappear and there are only four remaining.
It does this each time I add them. It is not a case of the icons being hidden
within the taskbar (i.e. fix by unlock and resize) - they have actually
disappeared. I can see this raised in a couple of other discussion forums,
but no clear answer to resolve. Any ideas?

Hi, BigDeano.

I'm a fan of the Quick Launch. I have about 20 icons there, but only 8 of
them show normally. The others are accessible when I click the little
chevrons at the right end of the QL Toolbar, just before the Taskbar. I
can, of course, unlock the Taskbar and resize the QL bar to see more or
fewer of them.

But I've never had Vista delete QL icons without my telling it to!

Hmm... You say this happens after you add the icons - and then restart
Windows? HOW are you restarting? Are you Shutting Down gracefully, so that
Vista has time to "put away its toys" and record any changes to the Desktop
that you've made this session? An abrupt restart - whether intentional or
because of some malfunction (or just "pulling the plug") - can cause Vista
to revert to the previous settings. Then all recent changes will have to be
redone after the restart.

G'day RC,
Thanks for the suggestion re graceful shutdown. However, I had been using
both Restart and Shutdown to provide a clean exit and the problem still
ocurred.

However, I think I have discovered a fix for the problem. I checked the
QuickLaunch folder under:
Desktop/<user>/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Quick Launch

There were a number of duplicate shortcuts in the folder and some of them
were designated as hidden files. I removed the duplicates and made sure that
none of the shortcuts listed were tagged as hidden files. Once this was done
I got all my icons showing in the Quick Launch taskbar and I have re-booted a
number of times with success now. If I set the Quick Launch folder to
"hidden" - they all disappear again. So it looks like that might be the
problem.

Thanks anyway - but looks like problem solved.

Cheers,

BigDeano

Hi, BigDeano.

Congratulations! And thanks for the report back. I'll have to remember
that in case anybody else reports a similar problem.

In a newsgroup, we all learn from each other. Today we learn; tomorrow we
teach. ;<)
