Questions for any Paperport v9 user

chris

I returned paperport v8 deluxe because of some problems
the program had.

v9 is now out and before buying I would appreciate if
anybody who owns/uses it could answer these 2 questions:

1) in v8, you could set the default scan/save format to GIF, JPG, or TIFF
(instead of MAX). In v9, the default appears to be PDF.
Like v8, is it still possible to change to a default save/scan format
to GIF, JPG, or TIF?

Assuming yes....

2) In v8, the TIFF default scan/save setting was brain dead.
The program could *manually* save a TIFF file as:
a)uncompressed
b)compressed (lossly JPG)
c)compressed (lossless LZW)

However the default scan/save TIF format was always
UNCOMPRESSED and could *not* be changed.
This was stupid because simply allowing the user to
choose compressed lossless (LZW or ZIP) would save
maybe 10x of disk space with no disadvantages.
As it was in v8, everything you scanned took MEGS of space
and you had to manually compress it or batch convert with
another program.

Has this been fixed in v9? Can you select LOSSLESS (LZW or ZIP) compressed
TIFF as the default save file format instead of being forced to use
uncompressed?

thanks.

Not sure about "fixed". Your question is a bit on the arcane side for
my simple brain.

PDF is in there now, but you can change that to whatever you like from
a limited choice. When it comes to TIFF, there are no separate
settings. I have never had a need to scan images -- PP is a
scan-to-text tool for me -- so have no idea if they have "mended"
something that I never thought broken.

Another way to approach your issue might be to acknowledge that
PaperPort is essentially a filing system that works with your
scanner's software interface. PaperPort can "eat" most of the standard
graphic formats. So if your scanner can deliver them, it can arrange
them.

You do not have to use PaperPort as in intermediary in the creation of
image files that you want it to manage. Then again, getting it to
manage graphics is a bit of a waste of time.

When you tried PP8, did you play around with the "Advanced options"
where you can set the compression?

You might like to consult the Yahoo! group of PaperPort
troubleshooters. Most are text heads but someone may know about
images.

Keep up with developments at:

It is where the "experts" hang out.
