Greetings,

How does the format feature found under My Computer > Local Disk C > right
click > Format work? Will it totally erase all the data and content on my C
Drive?

How does this feature work differently from the format feature on the full
version of Windows XP Home Edition when I do a clean install on my computer?

I am just not certain how the format feature works in the Format section of
Local Disk C.

My question is this:

How do I go about completing a Clean Install of Windows XP if I do a format
of Local Disk C from the My Computer > Local Disk C > right click > Format
feature?

Thanks in advance for your help and comments on this question I ask.

If you have the time I would recommend zeroing hard drive
using a download from maxtor like max blast 3 you can
download copy to floppy reboot and in the program it has
maintence options like quick zeroing first 64 sectors or
fill drive with zeros. I have loaded after many mistakes
but it seems that if you only format it looses track of
where files are but as you install windows it will copy
some of your present files over and you may have some bad
some good files. But I would go to whoever made your hard
drive and look for download maintence or formating
programs and try to completly erase hard drive. This takes
about 5 hours on my 80G maxtor AMD 2400. Hope this might
help.

You can't format the drive Windows is installed to. If you want to clean
install XP, follow the steps in the link below.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

You cannot format C: from within windows, thus cutting the system away
from under your feet. You can only do so as part of a reinstall. The
r-click and Format is available for other drives if you have any

Alex,

Thank you. Now I have a better understanding of that Format feature.
