Questions about 2005 Editions

Hello,

I have a few questions about the 2005 editions of VB.NET and VS as a whole.

Is the only stand alone VB.NET the express edition?

In looking at the standard VS.NET 2005, it says deployment is "Click Once".
What does that mean?

Can you create msi's with the standard?

Yes.

In looking at the standard VS.NET 2005, it says deployment is "Click

This means that only the typically browser-based Click Once deployment is
suported. Offline-setups cannot be created with this version of VS.

Can you create msi's with the standard?

If you are referring to traditional setups: No, this is AFAIK not
supported.

Thanks for the good information. It looks like I'll be going for the
professional edition when I do purchase it. For now, express works for me.

Although, the Product comparison page on MSDN's website say that Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition only has ClickOnce
Deployment, I have found that it does have the option for Setup Projects using MSI.
At least the copy I have does it. I got my copy from one of the Launch Events and there is the possibility that it is a special
edition. But, I don't think so. As I understood the info I received both before the launch when I registered and later at the
event itself, the handout software given to attendees was the full retail version of
Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition. So, I would expect that the versions that retailers and Microsoft will be selling will
contain the same features.
Also, the product comparison page also states that the Express Editions do not have deployment ability. That is not true either,
I downloaded the Express Edition of VB 2005 & C# (release versions) and both have ClickOnce Deployment. So, it looks to me like
someone forgot to give the advertising department more info when they created the product pages. Either way, it's a nice bonus
for everyone.
