Question2: Windows 3.x and Radeon9800 or Radeon series driver

Tony DiMarzio

Please don't ask why :) , but I am trying to get Wfw (windows for
workgroups) 3.11 to cooperate with my 9800 pro. All I want is to be able to
do 1024x768@8bpp, or what win3.x refers to as a SVGA mode. Setting this mode
using the win3.x generic driver results in graphics corruption and is
unusable. Has anyone heard of or used an ATI driver that works with Radeon
serious vid cards in win3.x? it might not even be a radeon driver, but
something close enough like a rage driver.

I don't think that's possible. The ATI cards that were around at the time
WFWG was the current operating system were the mach 8 and mach 32 and 64
cards which were a totally different technology than the accelerators used
today. You will probably be able to get the Radeon card to work in VGA mode
because all video cards use VGA as the default display just to display BIOS
and POST information. But otherwise I think you are out of luck. If you
are just trying to see if you can get it to work, cool. But what about
motherboard drivers, and all the other hardware on your PCI system? WFWG
will not have drivers for any of that stuff.

Wfw3.11 is basically a GUI front end to it's underlying DOS base. In MY
particular case, the underlying DOS base is MS-DOS 7.10 full (not the one
bundled with win98). So if DOS works then it follows -Win3.x should work,
and it does... albeit with a little tweaking.

At this point I have Wfw3.11 running on my system. The only drivers 3.11
needed/accept were audio, video, and network. I've about given up on the SB
audigy. The network is getting close but no cigar yet (i've got tcpip and
windows networking running in DOS 7.10 already though) - it's really ****in
pissing me off because the error message lacks verbosity so i can't
debug.... And video - that's the most important :) you cant run an os at VGA
resoltuion and color. yuck.

Sounds a little like running Win98 in safemode. Have fun.
