Question Regarding PC700 & PC800 Memory

Someone I know is building another machine from junk parts. His
current project has two sets of dual RAMBUS, 2 - 256MB PC800 and two
64MB PC800. He wants to increase memory size and says he found 2 -
128MB PC700 for $10 on EBay. This will increase the memory but
decrease speed.

Would there be improvement/loss in performance? Is it worth the
trouble?

It depends on how much memory his OS/applications use. A WinXP Home installation with just a browser, word processor etc. will run fine with 640 MB, and adding slower memory would slow the system, but just slightly. On the other hand if he runs things that require about 900 MB the performance increase with the extra memory would be quite large.
