Question re Flat Bed Film Scanners & Optical vs Selectable Resolution

I have a few questions about the resolution specs in 2 related
Canoscan Flat Bed Scanner machines that have me very confused. The
specs for my newer, much heavier Canoscan 5200f are: Optical Res
2400-4800 dpi, and Selectable Res 25-9600 dpi. On my cousin's older &
lighter Canoscan d1250u2f, the specs are: Optical Res 1200-2400 dpi,
and Selectable Res 25-9600 dpi, the same as my scanner. Both scanners
will do 35mm colour film, however, mine will do 4 at a time, and hers,
1.

The main questions I have are, firstly, why, when she brought her
machine over to compare with mine/do some slide scanning, was she able
to select hers at the max Output res of 2400 dpi, and why was I only
able to select as a max the same res of 2400 dpi on my newer, more
expensive machine when it says 2400-4800 dpi in my machine's specs?

We compared scans, and though mine was a touch bit lighter or
brighter, and therefore showed more detail, I wondered if it wasn't
just a case of the lamp on her machine being not as bright, being
older, espc. since we both scanned at the same res. Hers at the max,
and mine, what I thought was at the min, but apparently is the max?
Her scans were darker in the darker areas, but also more vivid. Mine
were paler, but had a little bit more detail, though that was mostly
seen in englarging it onscreen.

Another question is, what exactly then is the difference between
Optical Resolution and Selectable Resolution, and why wasn't I able to
select mine at the max and see a really greater difference between the
2 scans of the same slide we did? What is the best flatbed resolution
for scanning this type of film if you want to both bring it up on
screen for viewing/websites, etc., and maybe also print the better
looking ones.

My cousin was thinking of upgrading to this newer Canoscan I have, but
really, apart from some slight extra detail and much increased price
of the scanner, I don't see the difference or the point, espc. since
we can only scan at the same dpi- or am I missing something here?

Thanks for any help.

1200x2400 dpi rating means 1200 dpi optical rating because it has a 1200
dpi sensor cell, but the vertical stepping motor can stop every 1/2400
inch to take that 1/1200 inch sample.

2400x4800 dpi rating means 2400 dpi optical rating because it has a 2400
dpi sensor cell, but the vertical stepping motor can stop every 1/4800
dpi to take that 1/2400 inch sample.

Selectable dpi determines the size of the resulting image. If you
specify 100 dpi and scan 6 inches, you get 100x6 = 600 pixels of image
dimension.
