Question: PCChips M810LR and AMD XP2000+

Built a Linux box for my own education and used leftovers from previous
projects. Initially had a 1.33 GHz Athlon CPU with PC100 memory that worked
fine. Tried to upgrade to an AMD XP 200+ and PC133 memory. Updated the BIOS
to the latest for the board. In SETUP I can set the CPU to the 2000+ and 133
MHz memory but during POST the unit hangs at the status page indicating the
problem is with the memory chip. If I downgrade the unit to a 1.295 GHz CPU
it plays fine. Tried all sorts of games (CMOS settings and a bigger power
supply among others) and I really don't want to spend any money on the box.

What am I missing. The BIOS upgrade, per PC Chips, says it should fly with
an XP 2000+ CPU.

What brand memory? Sounds like is not happy at 133, what make are the
chips? Can you borrow a known good PC133 DIMM?
Mike.

Founf the PCCHIPS Lottery BBS and found the answer.

It is a brand new Crucial PC133 chip, fresh out of the box. From my readings
at the PCCHIPS Lottery BBS it seems that my particular model (an earlier
version of the M810LR) may not support the XP 2000+. I'm going to go back to
the 1.33 MHz chip and try the PC133 with it. According to the BBS it will
probably fly OK with the increased memory speed.

This is one of several threads that addresses the problem:

Reverting to the AMD 1.33 GHz Athlon and the new Crucial PC133 memory boots
fine in my particular mobo. I guess that is the way it is going to be as I
don't want to spend any money "improving" the system.

I was just trying to see if the Linux box could crunch seti@home (BOINC)
any faster that the approximate 6 hrs/work unit it was doing. I did have
PC100 before I decided to "upgrade" to the XP 2000+.

It'll work but flying isn't something I'd say it did. Did the same to a
mate of mine. Worked OK but had to uprate his 250W PSU.

Thanks Conor, I tried an AMD approved 350 wt power supply and that didn't
help. I've reverted to the 1.33 gHz CPU and PC133 memory and it runs fine,
just a lot slower than some of my other PC's runing seti@home.
