Question on old chips

Hello,

I was looking for some help...I have two old chips. One is a pentium
MMX 200 mhz chip and the other a Cyrix MII 333 83mhz 3x chip I was
thinking of setting up a PC using one of these chips to run old games
and be a files server. I am wondering which chip is faster. I am
reading a lot saying that the Cyrix MII chip is a 250 mhz chip, but I
thought it was marketed as a 166+ (I admit I am not sure I am
remembering correctly). Is the my cyrix chip a 166+ or a 250 mhz chip?
Anyone know?

While I am at it, anyone know how I might go about determining what
brand of motherboard I have? There are no markings except for the
following:

On the back:
BAE-VO 9806
Elpiuna

Front:
Amibios chip
4 EDO SIMM bays
2 DIMM bays
ATX and AT
PS/2
4 PCI
3 ISA
Socket 7
UMC chip
2.8v - 3.5v CPU jumper settings

Ummm, 83MHz x 3 = 249MHz. The Cyrix will be much faster than the
Pentium in your particular application.

While I am at it, anyone know how I might go about determining what
brand of motherboard I have? There are no markings except for the
following:

Your Cyrix chip is a 333+ (250MHz, as you point out) and will be faster
than the P5-200 in almost every way. If the chipset can really do 83MHz,
I'd go that way. ...with a nice fansink. ;-)

The Cyrix MII fits the same Socket 7 as the MMX200, but the MII is one
processor generation ahead, hence the 'II' as in Pentium II. However,
the MII runs at higher voltage than the MMX200; you will need the
motherboard manual to set the jumpers correctly (if possible).

You're Cyrix chip runs at 250MHz and was marketed as a "PR2-333" chip.
It's definitely the faster of the two chips. Even for floating point
stuff (the notorious weak-point of Cyrix chips) it will be faster,
mainly due to the fact that the Pentium MMX wasn't so hot (vs. the
PII) at floating point stuff either. The "PR2-333" designation might
be a little optimistic, but it's definitely faster across the board
than a PentiumMMX 200.

Assuming that is supposed to be "Elpina" and not "Elpiuna" than that
is you're motherboard reseller. This is one of the dozens of
companies that sold PCChips motherboards. Most of these boards are
actually produced by ECS, though figuring out just who did what with
these Chinese companies is more of a challenge than I'm up to.
They're all vaguely related.

FWIW I don't think that the Elpina brand-name exists anymore, though
you might be able to find some info about your board from the PC Chips
website (if/when it's up) at www.pcchips.com.tw Don't expect much
though, these guys are pretty much bottom-feeders.

You could actually answer some of your own questions.Why not install
both chips and do your own comparison?
I’ll have a $1 on the underdog the 200mmx.
Your board has two slots for SD ram with a max of 84mhz setting?
Generally a max of 2 X 128Mb PC 100 or PC 133 if it’s good quality and
clocks back OK.
They referred to late socket seven as super socket seven boards and
they were virtually the same with an updated BIOS to handle 100mhz.
I bet a $1 if the 200mmx is setup on a board like this because it will
not be fussed at 250mhz anyway
Does the board have Intel on the chips anywhere?
Hit the Intel website and match it up visually or if you have the BIOS
string ? Search AMI or whoever, and entering the BIOS string will lead
to more info than you need.
I think maybe 430 TX or 430 something chipset?
