Question about the length of IDE cables

actually 18" is the longest an IDE cable is supposed to be, still i can't
imagine it would be worth the effort to try repairing a cable you can
replace for $1.

behind the damaged area to creat a single drive cable of 12 inches, or is 18 the
shortest an IDE cable can be?

Just FYI, I have installed 36" IDE round cables without any issues.
Of course, they are much more expensive than $1!

Yes. The IDE cable needn't have 2 device connectors.
Right now, I'm using a "round" IDE cable, 10 inches in length,
with only 1 device connector, and there is no prblqnrmd.ne

they may work but 18" is the maximum length specified for IDE cables, beyond
that you maybe relying on the drives error correcting abilities to keep
things running smoothly.

I have a 36" ribbon cable on my secondary IDE connecting the CD burner and DVD.
No problems at all.

You could make the cable connectors back to back if you could get it plugged
in on both ends. Make the thing as short as you want, as the shorter the
better in this case.
Make it long enough to tuck it away so the drive can breathe if you can.
