Question About start Menu

Altria

Hello All,
I am currently running win 2k AD GPO with xp pro clients. I have folder
redirection occuring for desktop and start menu. Everything works fine but
when I do updates for the machine (such as windows update IE 6.1) It creates
icons in the start menu for that user. Since that user is heavily restricted
he is not allowed to remove items in Start Menu. When I log into the client
machine as Admin the icons are not there. Initially it was Admin logon that
enabled me to run the update since the ordinary user does not have that
privelidge. I looked everywhere for these icons including All Users and
Default User folder in Document and Settings and still I cannot find these
icons. Is there a known place for these icons so that I may remove them
manually such as in the registry?
Thanks,
Altria

Hello Altria,

You should be able to see these icons in the Start Menu\Programs folder
under the effected users profile in Documents and Settings.

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs.

If this is a place that you have already checked, the following information
may assist you further:

To start off you MUST Insure the icons are not comming from somewhere else.
Usual
locations are:

- C:\Documents and Settings\Default User or C:\Winnt\Profiles\Default User
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users or C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users
- LogonServer\Netlogon\Default User (if the user is logging into a domain)
- a Roaming/Mandatory Profile (if the user is logging into a domain)

Once those are verified, proceed to the steps below:

To prevent the system from creating the Internet Explorer icons set the
following
key to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\StubPath

To prevent the system from creating the Outlook Express icons set the
following key
to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}\StubPath

To prevent the system from creating the Outlook Address Book icons set the
following key to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02}\StubPath

The above do not include removal of the Internet Explorer Desktop Icon which
can be
removed by a group policy. To prevent the Internet Explorer Desktop icon
from
showing:
- Open gpedit.msc (Local Security Policy)
- Follow down to the path: User
Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Desktop
- Enable the "Hide Internet Explorer icon on desktop" Policy
