Hope this isn't OT for this group, I'm sure someone here has insight into
this. I'm running XP pro SP2. I have been listening to audio online for
years now. My preferred method is to simply dl the audio file, usually an
mp3, then play that file on winamp. This way there are no dropouts from
bandwitdh limitations (even though I have an 8 meg cable connection, I find
some streaming audio pauses due to bandwitdh troubles, maybe on the sender's
end) and I can set the audio as I wish with the Winamp equalizer. Lately
though many sites seem to be switching to "podcasts", where you have a
client like ipod that runs all the bloody time & "subscribes" to various
programs. This seems like an added step/unecessary complexity/added
crap-runnning -in-the-background compared to the method of simply browsing
for a program & dl'ing it to play when you want. One such program is the
Rick Steves travel show, which you can stream from
http://www.ricksteves.com/radio/archive.htm#22 On my 1st try at this
however, I get annoying dropouts. You can also "subscribe to the podcasts"
at http://www.ricksteves.com/radio/podcast.htm But again, you have to load
ipods, then run IT, just to get the file! I like to keep things simple; I
don't want to add another program! When I click on the "subscribe" button,
it immediately tells me I don't have ipods & asks if I want to dl it. NOT
IF I CAN HELP IT! ;-) Is there any way to just dl the audio file from these
podcast sites?

TIA

You're right, this isn't the newsgroup for this question. Try something
like
microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web

Or one of the other microsoft.public.windowsmedia newsgroups.

I found this intersting web site http://podcast.dnbhost.com for those who
may have similar issues with this.
