question about command & cmd

If I type start & in the run cmd I get command prompt & if I close it I
click the x on top of the window to close it, If I type command it says
windows dos & of I clock the x to close it I get message saying 'windows
cannot end this program' if i type 'exit' then it closes! what the
difference between these command & cmd? & why wont command close when I hit
x?

COMMAND.COM is a deprecated 16-bit command interpreter, which is only left
in Windows for backward compatibility. The message you receive is typical
for COMMAND.COM

CMD.EXE is a full 32-bit command interpreter, and is the preferred CLI for
Windows NT-based operating systems.

My suggestion is, unless you have an actual reason to use COMMAND.COM,
don't. Use CMD.EXE instead.
