Question about Acronis true image software

Luis Ortega

When you create a full backup with Acronis, is that the method for
making a disk image that you could use to reimage your c drive with all
of the operating system, installed programs and files that were on there
when the backup was made?
Or does one use the clone feature to create a copy of the disk and use
that to reinstall the c drive?
Do you need to make a bootable disk if you have the original disk from
Acronis or can the purchased disk be used as a boot disk in case you
need to reinstall the c drive contents?
Thanks for any advice.

1. Yes. Acronis calls this "Backup" and when you want to apply that image
back onto your hard drive (or a new hard drive in the same machine), you
"Restore" that image. The image can be stored on anything large enough to
hold it such as a hard drive in an external USB enclosure, a network drive,
or an additional internal hard drive (not recommended).
Or does one use the clone feature to create a copy of the disk and use
that to reinstall the c drive?

2. Usually one makes a clone when one is going to replace the hard drive
from which one makes the clone. A very useful thing to do is to clone the
perfectly working hard drive to a new hard drive which you then put in a
static-free bag in a closet in case you ever need to replace the original
drive. It's a good disaster strategy for businesses with complex
installations.
Do you need to make a bootable disk if you have the original disk from
Acronis or can the purchased disk be used as a boot disk in case you
need to reinstall the c drive contents?

3. I believe the retail Acronis disk is bootable. Acronis' Help will answer
these questions as will the FAQs on the Acronis website. There is also an
active user forum.

4. It is useful to create the Acronis bootable media from within the Acronis
program to:

a. Preserve the original retail disk from getting scratched.
b. If you have other Acronis products, they will also be available on the
bootable rescue disk. For instance, my rescue disk has full/safe True
Image, full/safe Universal Restore for TI, full/safe Disk Director, and
Disk Cleanser.

Answers to further questions about using Acronis can be found on the Acronis
website as this is not really a Vista issue.

the full backup is the option to use. You only need to use the 'clone'
option if you are planning on installing a new hard drive and you want to
move all the operating system/ applications etc from the old drive to the
new drive.

It is always preferable to use the 'create bootable disk' option from within
Acronis. That way you can keep your purchased CD in perfect condition. You
may not use it that often as you can image the drive back from within
Acronis, so long as you can get into Vista. If you cannot log into vista it
is then that you will need the bootable disk.

Thanks for any advice.

Create a disk image to a file on a backup drive. To restore the
original boot the Acronis CD (which boots linux BTW :) and follow the
prompts to restore an image from file.

I've done this a lot after switching from ghost when they
runined it around version 10.
