Question about 2007 features

A

Alanna

I am using 2003 but considering upgrading. One thing that drives me crazy
about 2003 is that if I change a graphic, it gets deleted from my custom
animations. I often use very complex animations and it is a real pain
reanimating it and trying to remember where it goes in the sequence. Is
there a feature in 2007 that you can just replace the graphic rather than
having to delete it?

Also are there are issues with opening existing 2003 ppt presentation in
2007? Will everything work as it should?

Thank you!

Assuming the graphic in question is a picture, then yes, there is a Change
Picture option.

If it's an autoshape, yes, that's there, too -- but it's also already there
in 2003 as well.

There will be some issues with back and forth between 2003 and 2007, but for
the most part, you should be okay opening 2003 files in 2007. You'll want to
make sure to have a Windows-certified printer driver installed on the
computer (not on the network) and set as the default printer driver. This
will prevent some odd display issues some users run into.

I'm sold - thanks for the scoop.

Cool. If I were you, I'd keep 2003 installed on the machine as well. Or,
actually, keep it installed on another machine. The point is, I'd try to
keep a copy of it around if at all possible! Just for the wonky stuff, you
know. :)

Good point. I also saw somewhere that you can download a program that keeps
the old 2003 toolbar and adds in the new 2007 stuff into it. Apparently
alot of things have changed with the toolbar and alot of people think it's
poorly organized from what I can tell in some of the reviews I read. Any
opinions on this?

I've been jumping back and forth between 2003 and 2007 for a little bit.
It's definitely confusing, but I'm starting to get used to where things
are in 2007. You'll spend the first day just looking for all the things
you used to know how to do. After that, it's pretty smooth sailing.

By the way, since you mentioned doing a lot of animation work, you might
want to check out Shyam's add-in, Animation Carbon. It might be helpful
for some of the things you do:

Well, I do think that moving back and forth between 2003 and 2007 is
confusing, so I do try to work in one or the other as much as possible. I'm
sure this back-and-forth has increased my learning curve. For example, half
the time, I can't find the slide show button because I never know which side
of the screen it should be on! (It's on the left in 2003 and prior, on the
right in 2007.) By the time I realize it's not on the left, my mouse is
already over there hovering on the left -- and vice versa, of course. So
I've started using F5 pretty regularly instead. :)

That said, I do like the Ribbon. I like it better in Word and Excel, where
I'm not a power-user, though. I find it generally pretty handy in Outlook,
too. In PowerPoint, I do admit I often find it frustrating.

I do like Patrick Schmid's Ribbon Customizer. It does have the classic menus
available as part of the free Starter Edition, but I don't use those -- I
do, however, like to use Ribbon Customizer to add things to the Ribbon so
some of the tools I use most frequently are available to me on the tabs and
in or near the groups where I would expect them to be.
http://pschmid.net/office2007/ribboncustomizer/index.php

I think the Ribbon is actually pretty well organized for casual users,
though. It's the power-users who suffer the most with it.
