query outputs number as strings

I have a field set a currency
When I run a query I have a resulting table with a corresponding field. Yet
when I copy a value from this filed and paste it into an Excel table the
value turns out to be a string.
Why so? Is it cirrect to think that when writing a query (I do it in SQL) I
need to specify that the output should be a number?
If so, how do I do this?

I have never worked with copying and pasting from Access to Excel, but
would that not need a "copy/paste/special??
