Quantum Power Max does not see External harddrive in Windows XP

I downloaded the PowerMax and put it on a diskette. Then ran it. It finds
the 2 internal hard disks ok but it does not see apparently the external
Quantum 40 GB hard disk in an external enclosure and connected via USB2.

It shows up fine under Explore in Windows XP though.

Does Power Max not work on external hard drives?

To see whether there are bad clusters, as the techie at the computer store
told me.

I don't get why anyone is flaming the OP for using the PowerMax
Software. Perhaps he wanted to image his internal drive to his
external? Anyways, here is the download link for the latest version,
but I am afraid you will not be able to check the drive over USB:

The problem is that the USB controller is not supported. You will have
to remove the drive from the external casing and plug it into the
computer. If this is a retail External Maxtor drive, there should the a
CD that came with it that you should use instead.

Nathan, thanks for your considerate and helpful reply. I now understand why
I have to check the drive Internally and not from the USB slot.

Not a problem. Most computers do not support USB until Windows has
loaded. Also, most software programs that are bootable don't have full
support for USB devices either. Glad I could help you figure that out :)
