I need to create something like a food pyramid with different colors on
different levels and with the words angled and give it a shadow effect. The
only diagram I can find is just a plain ordinary triangle that I cannot give
any effects to. Am I looking in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing? I
have PP2003 version.

That's exactly what I did. The only problem is once I picked the pyramid, or
"triangle", I could add text but only change it one direction (not good) and
I could not use any effects such as shadowing that I could see. Unless, of
course, I am not looking in the right place. I guess that is where I need
direction is how to edit the triangle once I have it. I may end up adding
text boxes to the pyramid to have the text the direction I want it.

Cindi,

You may have to build it with the Basic shapes in the Auto-shapes section.
By using a triangle and some trapezoids, and moving them into place, you
could build a food pyramid and color the different sections to differentiate
them.

go to Autoshapes/Basic Shapes/triangle to place a triangle on the slide
then
go to Autoshapes/Basic Shapes/ trapezoid, then flip it vertically, then
place it under the traiangle
and so on, resizing the trapezoids to build the pyramid.

Does this make sense?

Try to draw the components using the freeform tool in draw > lines

To use click to start move to the next "corner" and click again - continue
to the end and double click to fininh (easier than it sounds)
If its not quite right, right click and >edit points

Did that answer the question / help?
