Putting graphics in word 2003

I am trying to insert a graphic into a document, actually a simple logo.
I have tried a BMP and JPG format. No luck.
I just get a rectangular box.
I have followed the Help instructions.
What am I missing?

I feel sheepishly stupid.
The problem was in the View settings
